Interval Training: Spice up Your Next Treadmill Workout

Using a treadmill to keep fit is a healthy option. It encourages walking and jogging, which are two fantastic preventatives against osteoporosis, as they are weight bearing and strengthen the skeletal system. Any type of exercise supports balance, coordination, muscle strength, and improved health, although cycling and swimming are non-weight bearing exercises that benefit the cardiovascular system. The legs contain the largest muscles in the human body, together with the trapezius and the gluteus muscles. This is why the legs can feel fatigued after only several minutes of walking or running. However, there is a way you can improve your workout. Firstly, choosing the right fitness equipment is key.

Why not visit Gym World, which has a large selection of quality equipment to assist with your weight loss or fitness journey, one of which is the Life Fitness F1 Smart Folding Treadmill with a built in heart rate monitor. Use of a heart rate monitor on fitness equipment helps you know when your body is either at a fat burning or cardiovascular heart rate level. There is also the option to buy a separate heart rate monitor, which makes it easy to carry around for exercise on the go.

Why is Interval Training So Effective?

This type of training also known as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) is common amongst professional athletes, as it creates incredible stamina over a short period of time. It will push through your pain barriers and test your willpower. However, you cannot expect to go straight into Interval Training without a basic fitness level. Work up to this level with regular exercise using the treadmill and other types of fitness equipment like the spinning bike. Regular spinning sessions alone or a part of a class will test your boundaries. Spinning is also competitive and will push your fitness levels further. Continue Reading »

Delicious Healthy Protein Bars

What do flapjacks and other energy bars have in common? Most of them contain some kind of additives and hydrogenated fats? And if you are not clear what hydrogenated fats are, they are simply hard fats that are liquified and re-hardened. Doesn’t sound very heart friendly!

Ingredients in PowerBar

Calcium caseinate (from milk) 21%, dark chocolate coating 18% (cocoa mass, sugar, cocoa butter, emulsifier: soya lecithin), fructose syrup, invert sugar syrup, oligofructose syrup, whey protein 8%, fat reduced cocoa powder 5%, soy protein 2.5%, flavourings, emulsifier: soya lecithin.

I used to be addicted to the BlackFriar Caramel Fudge Flavoured flapjacks (nowhere can I find the full ingredients), but they used to leave a greasy consistency on my fingers and the ingredients ply well. Whether it is butter or oil, at 518 calories, just over a 1/4 of my daily calorie intake, I had to find a simpler way to supply protein without the necessary unsaturated fats. Although oats are a good source of fibre, the oil or butter will only add pounds to the frame.

I’ve never been good at baking, but I saw the recipe at Dr Ben Kim for Healthy Bars and made some with dried cranberries. The ingredients cost over £10, but it made about 25 slices. They tasted delicious and I vowed to make more. They consist of only dried figs, pecan nuts, and vanilla essence. As they are an excellent source of fibre and protein, they can be cut into half the size of a normal flapjack and still be filling. Pecan nuts are very expensive, but flapjacks and energy bars are expensive anyhow. I realise that energy bars are an easy way to fill the body with protein when on the go, but if you make your own, you will supply the body with excellent nutrition without the unnecessary additives.

The latest batch I made makes about 30 slices. I used a cup of muesli, a cup of pecan nuts, cup of mixed nuts, 1.5 cups of dried figs, and 1.5 tablespoons of vanilla essence. You can change up the variety of nuts and ingredients used, as using pecan nuts every time will work out pricy!

Ingredients Required

  • 1 mug of muesli
  • 1 mug of pecan nuts
  • 1 mug of assorted raw nuts
  • 1.5 mugs of dried figs (soak for 2-3 hours beforehand)
  • 1.5 tablespoons of figs
  • Dried fruit (optional)

Method

  1. Add the muesli, nuts, and figs into a food processor. Add the vanilla extract.
  2. Blend for about a minute until the consistency is smooth.
  3. Add to a baking dish and smooth over.
  4. Cut into slices and allow to cool and set in the fridge or overnight.
  5. Voila! Beautiful healthy flapjacks without the trans fats.

Trust me, they are nutty, delicious, and perfect to eat on the go!

Easy Exercise

Visiting a gym is time consuming, especially when you have to gather your clothes, trainers, and drink or snack. But I’ve discovered an easy way to exercise that is also enjoyable and will boost the metabolism…if performed consistently. This can be done at home or at work, although you may get a few funny looks from your colleagues, but I used to do jumping jacks in the toilets whenever my nipples turned hard.

If you enjoy coffee, like myself, while you are waiting for the kettle to boil, it is easy to do twenty squats and twenty lower abdominal crunches by balancing the hands on either side of a kitchen top. These exercises take only around 1.5 minutes but boost the heart rate enough to feel the change. If you have the time, you could throw in even twenty press-ups to tone the pectoral muscles, back, and triceps. For women, press-ups are best way to give the breasts a toned youthful look. I may no longer attend boxing, but I like to perform press-ups, hula hooping, or squats several times a week during TV advertisements or while I’m waiting for the kettle to boil. Throw in a Tabata squat workout to further challenge the body. My legs and buttocks are fast becoming used to the intensity as I no longer suffer days and days of Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS). I may be unable to do 200-squats, like the athletic man in this video, but I manage around 130-150 in 4-minutes and then my legs turn to jelly.

So that all waiting around can come to good use and tone up your body in next to no time. All it requires is slight effort, motivation, and then you can look forward to your daily cuppa. And if you perform the squats, sit-ups, and press-ups three times a day, you will gradually notice improves in your body including tighter abs, a toned bum, and well-defined arms and back. Exercise doesn’t always require running for an hour on the treadmill or a perspiring spin workout when every minute in between can come to good use.

Beetroot – A Fantastic Colon Cleanser

My current favourite vegetable is beetroot. I buys tons of fresh beetroots and roast them and add them into the Ukranian delicacy, Borscht. The great thing about vegetables is one can never overdose on them. We can overdose far too easily on fat, salt, and sugar, but beetroot is naturally sweet and alkalises the body. The benefit of an alkalised body is a boost in energy, a cleaner colon, vibrant skin, a sense of wellbeing, and less of a craving for unhealthy foods.

Beetroot is a potent blood cleanser, which is important since the skin is bombarded with pollutants daily, but I’ve since learned it is also a wonderful colon cleanser. So throw out the disgusting Senokot and eat cooked or raw beetroot instead. Stress is the cause of many digestive problems and may encourage haemorrhoids or constipation. Beetroot is dirt cheap and is one of the healthiest foods we can consume. Studies have shown that beetroot may prevent cancer, reduce hypertension, and cleanse a sluggish colon.

Experts may say it is useful to empty the bowels 1-3 times per day, but a healthy colon will release toxins 30-60 minutes after EVERY meal, so it’s not abnormal to visit the toilet 3-6 times per day, if you prefer to eat regulary like myself. I don’t visit the toilet 5-6 times every day, but since I made a large pot of Borscht on Thursday night, I have had five healthy bowel movements today, and nor did they smell foul. Sure, the stools are red, but this is a sign of the fantastic detoxification benefits of eating beetroot. Continue Reading »

Ditch The Diets

With so many millions diets now available (okay maybe I’m over reacting there), there is often the thought that it is sexier to be thin. From diet chefs and weight loss supplements to Weight Watchers and the Karl Lagerfeld Diet. This world is getting diet CRAZY. It has to stop!

Did it ever occur that your body might need more nutrients and how the body may struggle to lose weight as it clings onto fear. Being thin is cool, if you are born with genius genes, but most of us feel guilty about being a few pounds or kg overweight. If 80 percent of your diet is full of junk food, then it’s probably best to lose weight for the benefit of the cardiovascular system, but if you eat foods containing a high amount of monounsaturated fats, there is no need to lose weight or switch to low fat foods that may contain as much sugar as a candy bar.

Saturated fat should be limited but polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats should be eaten daily. Avocados, raw nuts, oily fish, seeds, and oils are beneficial for heart and skin health. Thin is not sexy if your internal body is fatty and the external lean. And yes, it is possible for thin people to have an unhealthy fat levels within.

It may be difficult to give up sugar altogether, even I love dark chocolate, but I try to choose a product that will also supply my body with antioxidants. I doubt chocolate eclairs have any benefit whatsoever, but I don’t eat them every day.

However, one should not feel guilty about consuming healthy monounsaturated fats found in nut butters, avocados, seeds, oils, raw nuts, and fish. Have you ever wondered how low fat foods taste good? Even the Special K bars contain tons of sugar, anything ending ose is a sugar derivative.

The Health Benefits of Raw Sauerkraut

One of my favourite snacks is raw sauerkraut. I am not a fan of condiments, as they contain so much sugar and additives, but raw sauerkraut is naturally sour as the shredded cabbage has been left to ferment. It is cheaper than Yakult or Actimel, and it may even be a super food. It is sold in jars in the supermarket, or if you have the time and space, it can be made at home.

The slight sourness of sauerkraut is from lacto-fermentation. Lactic acid is formed when bacteria ferments with the sugars from the fresh cabbage. In Eastern Europe, Sauerkraut is often fermented with salt or peppercorns, but the original sauerkraut was formed in China.

Health Benefits of Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut can be boiled, fried, or eaten raw, as I prefer. Ukranian Varenky may contain potato, cheese and sauerkraut, but my favourite are pure sauerkraut varenky. It may be added to salad or used as an alternative to potatoes, as it is very filling and contains only 23 calories per 100 grams. Cabbage is a member of the cruciferous family and cancer fighting, but all green vegetables contain high levels of Vitamin C and potent antioxidants to protect the immune system and remove toxins. Benefits of The Avocado Fruit

I had always wondered how an Avocado tasted, but it took me 31 years to try one. My partner Jon is always eating them so I purchased a couple. I was surprised by how bland it tasted, but it can be eaten alone, added to a stir-fry, or chopped into a salad. The further ripe the Avocado, the softer it will be inside, and the seed will pop out.

Why Do Dieters Still Avoid The Avocado

One who is watching his or her weight often immediately puts any food labelled “fatty” or “high in calories” to one side. When it comes to fats, it is important to know which ones are beneficial and which are bad for the body. Yes, Avocados contain fat, but they contain only the healthy monounsaturated fats beneficial for the health of the body.

The Benefits of Monounsaturated Fats

Monounsaturated fats help to protect the heart and prevent atherosclerosis. They also give the skin a healthy glow. The usual very healthy foods are avoided by dieters, and often because a celebrity is following a fad diet. However, celebrities crave admiration from men and women. There is competition in the fame world and if one wants to reach the top s/he must be the fittest, the slimmest, or the prettiest…the list goes on. This is not real life and one should stop reading the celebrities magazines in hope that one day he or she will wake up with a stick-thin body only admired by Hollywood.

In addition, the number of “chef” dietary programmes makes me laugh. Is it logical to pay £60 to £70 per week on healthy meals that can be cooked fresh in your own kitchen? If I fancy making something new, I could do a quick search on the Internet. There are tons of recipes. Continue Reading »

Pyramid Training

A great way to build strength in the body is through an exercise known as pyramid training. Pyramid training is effective in two ways.

  1. It warms up the muscle groups and joints that are to be targeted.
  2. The targeted muscles and supporting muscles require correct form to perform the exercise correctly so as not to cause injury.

Pyramid training works in two ways with strength and repetitions, e.g. use 5kg dumbbells and perform 12 reps then increase the weight to 7.5kg and perform only 10 repetitions. Withdraw two repetitions while increasing the weight by 25%. This form of training puts pressure on the muscle and effectively causes small tears to occur. With adequate hydration and good sources of protein, lean muscle mass will build creating a higher metabolism, which means more calories are burnt at rest, the body will decrease its fat stores, and the body the body will look leaner and more defined.

Pyramid training pushes the muscles into overload. Anyone can benefit from using this rather intense form of resistance training. By using pyramid training, the muscles soon become used to the weight and can therefore be pushed to lift heavier weights. The heavier the weights used, the stronger the body will become. Soon enough, lifting your usual weight will become effortless and an increase in resistance will be required to build further strength. Continue Reading »

I Ended Water Fast

After a fairly easy Thursday on day 5 of a 6 day water fast, I suddenly felt nauseas and lightheaded in the evening, so I made my home made carrot, coriander, and red pepper soup without using any stock cubes, just fresh ingredients, and had a small bowl. Sure, I probably should have ended my fast with juices, but I’ve been eating light and soup is liquified vegetables.

At times today, it has felt strange. I felt energetic then sleepy then energetic. I’ve had no cravings for junk food, coffee, or even the remainder of the yummy parkin cake I bought last week. I haven’t eaten much. A glass of juice with my vitamins this morning followed by two scrambled eggs fried in a little butter, a bowl of soup in the afternoon, several herbal teas, two bowls of soup in the evening, and 3 rice cakes with peanut butter, plus more fresh juice and one cup of tea. It doesn’t sound much, but it’s satisfied me enough, and I’ve never made soup with using two or three vegetable oxo cubes. Without stock, the soup tasted sweeter, even though I add my own sea salt and black pepper. In fact, it’s the best soup I’ve ever made, and soup is gentle on the digestive system.

On the toilet this afternoon my fecal matter was still a strange blue/green colour, but I can only guess these are toxins or old matter in my colon. Scary thought!

Water fasting is far more powerful than juice fasting as it helps one to realise why food can become an addiction. I do not eat 5000 calories per day, but sometimes I do eat when I am bored and that’s telling me that I need to be working on myself. And I would guess I’ve lost 9 pounds in all, and yes I guess the weight will come back on if one eats a bad diet after a water fast, but putting fresh, healthy food into the body will help the body detox. I’m still considering doing a one day fast without food and water just once per week. It is said one should start it in the evening after a meal, sleep through, and there are only several hours to go before one can eat in the evening. The arthritic pain in my left hand bothers me when I’m writing, and my athletes foot is better but not completely gone, although I’ve been taking colloidal silver, which does seem to have helped tremendously.

6 Day Water Fast – Day 5

After my last blog post, I had a strange looking dump, which was black, green, and had tinges of blue. Either this is old bacteria or I am an alien. Yesterday the day went from good to fabulous to ecstatic. I felt in touch with everything. I wondered, is this the feeling one has when winning the lottery? My heart leapt as I walked into town to buy some vegetables. In fact, the water fast is more powerful than the previous 6 day juice fast I commenced last year, as the junk food cravings have gone. I broke my last juice fast with a pizza shared with a friend, but now I can’t wait to have a glass of ruby red orange juice and a bowl of delicious home made carrot and coriander soup.

I can promise you that the hunger pangs disappear totally at day 4 as the body enters ketosis. In fact, I feel like I could live this forever, but time does go slowly and it is a boring time as food smells so good. Also, the senses heighten dramatically. Never had a pizza smelt so good yesterday when I hopped off to my mums to chill and read “Poisoning our Children,” which is about pesticides and how harmful they are to the body since environmental illness is becoming far more common. The amount of chemical products that are untested yet still allowed to be sold within a product and to the public is scary indeed!

I look forward to my liquorice herbal tea and warm water with lemon and sea salt every morning. Seems that I do have the mental strength to do a water fast, and it does give the body more energy, although it’s all in the mind as the body does need rest. However, can every detox offer such quick bliss without having to spend under £100? Fast food restaurants are there for a reason, to dumb the mind and make us become dependant on using food to fuel our emotions. Without overweight, diseased people in the world, the diet industry would go bust overnight. From herbal potions and shakes to smaller portions and superfoods…the list goes on and on as we strive to find the easiest way to lose weight.

Since I often turn to food when I am bored, never emotional, just bored, the boredom of a water fast steals that attention away from the need to eat when I am not hungry. It has totally changed my mindset about food, and we should treat our body as a temple as I am trying to in giving it a thorough 6 day water fast detox, which is equivalent to 18 days of juice fasting.

The only downside to the end of day 4 was the pain I felt in my hands. I prayed and surrendered for the pain to go away as typing is so painful at times. Sleep has been wonderful and today I feel much the same as yesterday, although as I write this blog my left hand is aching slightly. I still have a white film on my tongue, which is candida. However, a water fast is so much more powerful than a juice fast, although the weight loss has been slower than with a juice fast (lost 12 pounds in 6 days), and at the end of day 4, I had lost 7-8 pounds.
